Farmers seek MSP for maize, cotton

Members of the district unit of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the district administration here on Friday urging the Union government to instruct the State government to fix minimum support price for maize and cotton and open purchase centres for them in districts.
The farmers who met Additional Deputy Commissioner Tippeswamy said that the prices of maize and cotton had collapsed and they were finding it difficult to get their investment back. Those who had borrowed loans from banks and other financial institutions were in a pathetic condition.
“The price of maize per quintal is around Rs. 900 and cotton’s price varies between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 4,000. If the farmers sell their produce at these rates, they will not get any profit. The government should fix a minimum support price of Rs. 2,000 per quintal for maize and Rs. 7,000 per quintal for cotton,” they added.
The farmers also said that the State government had decided to open purchase centres in districts from December 1, but the Union government gave an instruction against it saying these two crops did not come under the public distribution system list. The farmers in Challakere, Molkalmuru and other taluks of the district were hit by adverse climatic conditions in the last four years and the order of the Union government would worsen their situation.
