Bird flu: 18 poultry farms under radar

The State government is taking all steps to prevent the spread of bird flu in Tamil Nadu and the people need not panic.
However, members of the public should extend their cooperation with the officials in tackling the crisis, said District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan here on Wednesday.
Speaking at a consultative meeting with officials to discuss the arrangements made to prevent the spread of bird flu, Ms. Muralidharan said all the 18 commercial poultry farms in the district were closely monitored by officials of the Animal Husbandry Department.
People rearing chicken should take steps and maintain hygiene in the poultry farms.
In case of death of chickens or symptoms such as poor feed intake, weakness, breathing problems or swelling in the heads of birds should be reported to the authorities.
People can consume well cooked chicken and eggs. However, consumption of raw and half-boiled eggs could be avoided, Ms. Muralidharan said.
R. Mohanarangan, Joint Director, Animal Husbandry, attended the meeting.
Consumption of raw and half-boiled eggs can be avoided, says Collector
