Tea prices perk up at Kochi tea sale

Some varieties saw marginal rise in prices at the Kochi tea auction.
Good liquoring and popular marks in the CTC dust category remained firm to dearer.
In sale no 49, the quantity on offer was 10,91,000 kg, which was lower compared to last week. However, the demand was good with 87 per cent on offer sold. As the sale progressed, high priced teas witnessed some resistance and declined in value.
The market for medium and plainer teas was dearer by ₹2 to ₹3 and sometimes more especially the Grainier varieties. Better export enquiry was noticed on medium and plainer varieties, the auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis said.
Despite good arrivals compared to last week at 19,000 kg, the Orthodox sale witnessed a less demand. The market for primary grades remained steady. Others were irregular and lower, witnessing some withdrawals.
In Cochin CTC dust quotation, good varieties quoted ₹93-158, medium fetched ₹66-116 and plain grades stood at ₹56-67.
With good demand in the leaf category, the quantity on offer in Orthodox grades was 169,500 kg, slightly up from last week levels. The market for Nilgiri Brokens was irregular and tended to ease.
In CTC leaf, the quantity on offer was 59,500 kg. With fair demand, the market for Brokens was lower with lot of withdrawals. Fannings was firm to dearer and absorbed by exporters and upcountry buyers.
In the dust varieties, Monica SFD quoted the best prices of ₹159 followed by Manjolai SFD at ₹149. In leaf grades, Chamraj OP fetched the best prices of ₹343 followed by Chamraj FOP at ₹322.
