Agriculture Department to Procure Vegetables, Says Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Agriculture Department will procure vegetables and fruits through Krishibhavans to sell it in the open market.   “This is to ensure that farmers get reasonable prices for the vegetables and fruits they produce. The project will be prepared within January 20,’’ Agriculture Minister K P Mohanan told a press meet here on Thursday.
 “Steps have also been taken to install Neera vending machines in panchayat offices. The products of Coconut Development Board and vegetable seeds will be also sold through panchayat offices,’’ Mohanan said.
 The minister claimed that agricultural production in the state has overcome negative rates and reached 5.26 per cent. The growth of production of vegetables increased from 22 per cent to 58 per cent. The production of milk increased by 10 lakh litres. The state will achieve self-sufficiency in the  milk production in three years, the minister said.
 There was a review meeting of the functioning of various institutions under the Agriculture Department in the morning.  Heads of 20 public sector undertakings and senior officials took part in the meeting.
