Farmers sore as water not released to dam at Uthamapalayam

Farmers in the command area of a nine-metre-high dam situated across a stream at Uthamapalayam in Kangayam taluk have only tales of neglect to tell regarding not letting out water from the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) canal to the dam.
According to them, water has not been let out for almost two decades to the stream named Vattamalaikarai Odai except on a handful of occasions.
“When the dam construction was commissioned in 1980, there had been a wave of delight among the farmers.
“But water stopped coming through the stream from the PAP canal through the Kallipalayam sluice since the late 80s,” C. Kandhasamy, president of the Association of farmers in the command area, toldThe Hindu .
S. Karuppiah of Dalit Liberation Movement- Tamil Nadu, said, “What is the purpose of keeping the dam idle after spending huge amounts on the project at a time when everyone was trying to increase acreage of crops?”
PWD (Water Resources Organisation) sources told The Hindu that the water could not be let out to the dam continuously because of a government order.
The order stipulates that only surplus water from PAP canal could be allowed to the dam and that too only after meeting the requirements in the ayacut of PAP canal as well as sending water to Upparu Dam, officials said.
